Shoulder Arthroplasty

Shoulder arthroplasty, also known as shoulder replacement surgery, can be life-changing for individuals with severe shoulder pain or damage.

By replacing the damaged parts of the joint with prosthetic components, you can regain shoulder motion, reduce pain, and return to an active lifestyle.

At Florida Joint Care Institute, our orthopedic team offers comprehensive assessments and advanced surgical solutions to help patients achieve lasting relief..

What is Shoulder Arthroplasty?

OVERVIEW

A variety of conditions can lead to the need for shoulder arthroplasty:

  • Advanced Osteoarthritis – Wear and tear of the shoulder joint leads to increased pain and decreased function.
  • Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy – Large rotator cuff tears that do not heal can cause the shoulder joint to degenerate over time.
  • Severe Fractures – Traumatic injuries of the proximal humerus that are beyond repair.

COMMON CAUSES

Certain factors increase the likelihood of biceps tendinitis:

  • Sports Involving Overhead Movements – Baseball pitching, tennis serves, swimming, or CrossFit routines.
  • Occupational Strain – Jobs requiring repetitive lifting, reaching, or carrying heavy objects.
  • Shoulder Impingement or Instability – Existing shoulder issues, especially rotator cuff tears, can contribute to abnormal stress on the biceps tendon.

Symptoms or Indications for Shoulder Arthroplasty

If you’re experiencing ongoing shoulder pain that interferes with your daily activities, shoulder arthroplasty might be an option. Common signs include:

  • Chronic Shoulder Pain – Persistent pain that worsens with arm movement or at night.
  • Decreased Range of Motion – Difficulty lifting your arm, performing overhead tasks, or rotating the shoulder.
  • Ineffectiveness of Nonoperative Care – Continued pain despite activity modification, medications, physical therapy, and/or injections.

Monitor Your Condition

If you’re unable to find relief through non-surgical measures or your pain significantly reduces your quality of life, schedule a surgical evaluation at our Trinity clinic. Early intervention may prevent further joint damage and improve outcomes.

The Florida Joint Diagnosis Process

Physical Examination

Our team conducts a thorough examination of your shoulder’s strength, stability, and range of motion, noting any areas of tenderness or deformity.

Imaging Studies

X-rays, CT scans, or MRI may be used to assess the extent of damage, identify bone deformities, and determine the most suitable surgical procedure..

Determine Next Steps

After reviewing your medical history and diagnostic results, we’ll discuss treatment recommendations, including whether shoulder arthroplasty is your best option.

Treatment Options

NON-SURGICAL

Many patients can improve their shoulder pain with nonoperative measures:

  • Physical Therapy – Exercises designed to strengthen surrounding muscles and maintain joint flexibility.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications or Injections – Can help reduce pain and swelling in the short term.
  • Lifestyle Modifications – Adjusting daily routines, using supportive devices, or limiting high-impact activities.

SURGICAL

When joint damage severely limits function and non-surgical methods have failed, shoulder arthroplasty can provide significant relief:

  • Shoulder Replacement Surgery – Damaged surfaces are removed and replaced with an artificial ball and socket.
  • Reverse Shoulder Replacement – Used especially for patients with advanced rotator cuff injuries or instability.
  • Post-Surgical Rehabilitation – Physical therapy is critical to regain strength, flexibility, and restore arm function after surgery.

How to Prevent Further Shoulder Damage

While arthroplasty may be necessary for advanced conditions, you can take steps to maintain shoulder health:

  • Stay Active with Low-Impact Exercise – Swimming, walking, or using an elliptical can help preserve shoulder mobility without excessive strain.
  • Practice Proper Lifting Techniques – Use your legs and core muscles to lift heavy objects instead of straining your shoulders.
  • Listen to Your Body – Don’t ignore pain. Early medical evaluation can prevent minor issues from becoming severe.
