Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP falls under the category of OrthoBiologics. PRP uses a patient’s own blood components to stimulate a healing response in damaged tissues such as tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. In response to injury or tissue damage, the body naturally uses platelets and white blood cells from the blood to begin the healing process. Under normal conditions, your platelets store growth factors which are released as a result of injury to help heal damaged tissue.
Modern technology allows us to concentrate platelets and white blood cells from your blood using a centrifuge. Then we inject the plasma directly into injured tissue and induce the same healing response in a more powerful way. By harnessing the body’s natural healing capability, the treatment can lead to a more rapid, more efficient, and more thorough healing response.
